Make Sure Your Company is Ready!

With a number of data breaches in the news recently, I felt the need to follow up on last week’s blog about the new data privacy laws being adopted by a handful of states. Last week I discussed The Nevada Electronic Transmission Encryption Law (NRS 597.970) and The Massachusetts Privacy Law (201 CMR 17.00). Other states will soon follow, so I suggest we all get ready.
Here are a couple of interesting articles about the new data privacy laws that are worth a read:
- “Data security law sparks concern,” Business Insurance magazine, April 4, 2010.
- “Analyst Perspective: Meeting State Data Security Requirements,” Mobile Enterprise Magazine, 2010.
- “Legislating Encryption,” Mobile Enterprise Magazine, 2009.
- “Coping with Legislation,” Mobile Enterprise Magazine, 2009.
Also, in BusinessWeek last week, The Corporate Executive Board wrote an article titled “The Age of Data Privacy”. It offers four key best practices to help businesses mitigate the potential of devastating data breaches.

Larry, thanks for the share. I think a lot of companies under estimate the negative impact any data loss incident can have on ones business. A great site for people to visit is http://datalossdb.org. It is a great place for any company CIO to visit.
