New Company Formed for High Availability Disaster Recovery
by: Joe Kernan
Too many small businesses leave themselves vulnerable to natural and man-made disasters, according to Peter Briggs, the co-founder of SafeData, a high-tech service provider who offers what he calls fool-proof preservation of a company's data files in times of trouble.
"For most small businesses, saving and retrieving their data is just a roll of the dice," said Briggs. "A lot of small companies, like insurance agents or real estate offices, are starting to realize that saving their data is just as important as any part of their business. For those companies, their data is their biggest asset. You can imagine the consequences when a large company loses its data, but the same thing can be just as devastating for a small company, or even worse."
Briggs and his partner, Larry Putterman, recently launched SafeData, LLC, a Warwick-based technology company focused on delivering what should be a faster and more cost-effective way for small- and midsized businesses to protect their data and recover and restore it to minimize downtime.
According to the Gartner Group, a leading independent consulting firm Briggs cited in a news release, "Fewer than 10 percent of small- and midsize businesses have crisis management, business recovery and business resumption plans in place."
Gartner also estimates that two out of five small- and midsize businesses that suffer a database disaster will go out of business within five years. With most information technology (IT) solutions designed for large enterprises, the options for small and midsize businesses have been limited, according to Briggs. He says SafeData offers the same protection that the larger companies have at a fraction of the cost.
"We looked everywhere in the market for high availability and disaster recovery solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses and we discovered two areas that were lacking," said Briggs. "One, the solutions were often cost-prohibitive for small- to medium-sized businesses to adopt. Two, even with the considerable investment required, the recovery times were too long."
Mr. Briggs was the founder of ADS, Inc., a traditional hardware and software integrator, 13 years ago. ADS offered availability and backup solutions to its mostly big clients. Working with numerous businesses on their continuity plans, he realized that small- and midsize businesses could not absorb the large investment necessary for disaster recovery. He saw a market for outsourced protection and joined forces with Putterman -who is an expert in operations and business development - to create SafeData and focus on serving the needs of smaller companies.
"Companies can no longer wait until their systems fail to find a way to prevent future outages or disasters," said Putterman, chairman of SafeData.
