SafeData Availability Hosting Service Breaks Away from ADS
by: iSeries NEWS Staff
ADS's high-availability and disaster-recovery hosting service has cut the apron strings. SafeData, which was formed in 2002 as an ADS business unit, has broken away to form an independent company headed by ADS founder Peter Briggs.
SafeData provides high availability, disaster recovery, and vaulting services for small and midsized iSeries shops that require uptime and availability, but don't want to bring those services in-house. The company is able to provide those services more cost-effectively, Briggs says, because it uses Capacity on Demand and Logical Partitioning on its 22 iSeries servers to give each customer an individual slice of iSeries processing power dedicated to that one company, with proven switchability.
"Most companies that run high availability are out of synch and haven't done switch testing," Briggs says. "But often their high-availability environment isn't stable."
The company's SafeData/HA service replicates data in realtime to an offsite data center, then provides a "mirror" of a customer's data and applications in case of planned or unplanned downtime. Its SafeData/DR service provides a disk-to-disk restore of data to a server in one of its data centers - in Warwick, Rhode Island, and Medford, Massachusetts - to provide continuity in case of a disaster. SafeData also provides a hot site for data recovery.
SafeData uses products from Lakeview and EVault for its services offerings, and it's evaluating other products to add to its services.
